Experts are warning people of seven things you should never let go down your kitchen sink to avoid blockages.
Many of us are guilty of disposing of these things down the plughole and may not even realise we shouldn't be doing it. Failure to do so could result in the dreaded task of having to unclog a blocked drain or pipe while they can also contaminate the local water supply.
Another grim result is the creation of huge fatbergs - enormous masses of congealed fat, oil, grease, and much more which block drains and sewers. They can also cause sewer flooding in the streets, homes and gardens and pollution to the local environment.

Engineers at United Utilities say the ability to keep sewers flowing and free from blockages is an ever increasing challenge. The constant battle, which involves teams of people working around the clock to deal with increased levels of fibre entering the sewer network as products such as wet wipes are flushed down the toilet, is required to minimise the chance of flooding.
