IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa’s defense was a big reason the Hawkeyes won 10 games and the Big Ten West last season. The inconsistency of the offense played a big part in Iowa’s four losses, including a 42-3 defeat to Michigan in the Big Ten championship game and the 20-17 loss to Kentucky in …

Japanese weather officials say Tropical Storm Meari is unleashing heavy rains on the main island of Honshu as it heads northward toward the capital, Tokyo. The Japan Meteorological Agency said Saturday that Meari made landfall in Shizuoka, southwest of Tokyo, bringing sudden heavy rains and blasting winds, and prompting warnings about mudslides and flooding. More than 72,000 people in the area’s main city of Shizuoka were told to evacuate due to possible landslides. The storm is expected to continue northward and hit Tokyo in the evening. Warnings on flooding, strong winds and heavy rainfall were issued for the Tokyo area.

Italy’s worst drought in decades has reduced the country’s largest lake to near its lowest level ever recorded. Tourists flocking to Lake Garda on Friday for the start of a long weekend found a vastly different landscape than in past years. An expansive stretch of bleached rock extended far from the normal shoreline. Northern Italy hasn’t seen rainfall for months and snowfall this year was down 70%, drying up rivers like the Po that farmers use to irrigate their crops. To compensate, authorities allowed more water from Lake Garda to flow out to local rivers. The lake’s temperature, meanwhile, has been above average for August and on Friday approached the average for the Caribbean Sea.

The Philadelphia Phillies take a 1-0 lead into the next game of the series against the New York Mets.

Carlos Rodon allowed two runs over six innings, Mike Yastrzemski drove in three runs and the San Francisco Giants beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-3. Just 7-14 since the All-Star break, the Giants snapped a four-game losing streak at home as they try to stay within striking distance of the postseason. At 55-57, they’re 7 ½ games behind the San Diego Padres for the National League’s third and final wild-card spot.  Rodon (11-6) gave up six hits, struck out seven and didn’t allow a walk. His 2.95 ERA is tied for ninth in the league.

Lacrosse is one of nine sports trying to gain inclusion into the 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles. To make the game invented centuries ago by the Native Americans even more fast-paced, the leaders came up with a version called “Sixes.” It features 6-on-6 competition, a 30-second shot clock and goalies starting play after scores instead of faceoffs. There’s also a smaller field and roster sizes are reduced. It’s designed to be more Olympic friendly. That sort of approach helped get rugby sevens into the 2016 Rio Games and 3-on-3 basketball into the Tokyo Games last summer.

SAN FRANCISCO — For most of Friday night, it seemed, Mike Yastrzemski was doing one of two things: driving runs in, or watching them leave the yard.

Gio Urshela had his 11th home run of the season among his three hits, Tyler Mahle pitched three-hit ball over six innings and the Minnesota Twins defeated the Los Angeles Angels 4-0. Gilberto Celestino also went deep for the Twins, who had dropped six of their last seven road games. David Fletcher had a pair of hits and Patrick Sandoval suffered his sixth loss in his last seven starts.
