STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Three Americans found dead at the Emerald Bay Sandals resort on the Bahamas’ Great Exuma Island were killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, authorities reportedly said this week, confirming investigative details first reported by the Nassau Guardian.

“At this juncture of the investigation, we can officially confirm that all three of the victims died as a result of asphyxiation due to carbon monoxide poisoning,” said the Royal Bahamas Police Force, as reported by CNN. “This matter remains under active investigation.”

The three victims, two men and one woman, were found dead on May 6. They were identified as Michael Phillips, 68, and Robbie Phillips, 65, from Tennessee, and Vincent Chiarella, 64, of Florida.

Michael and Robbie Phillips were husband and wife, authorities said, and Chiarella’s wife was transported to the hospital after feeling ill after the couples were discovered.

The resort told CNN it had taken additional precautions following the incident; however, it was not immediately clear what caused the carbon monoxide leak.
