LOCK HAVEN — The Lock Haven Area Shoe Bank has streamlined the check-in process for kids and teens who will get free new shoes on Saturday, May 21.

Starting this month, families will only have to show their active Compass PA app on their phone or a current Compass summary sheet. This eliminates the need for Access or CHIP cards.

The Shoe Bank is inside Covenant United Methodist Church, 44 W. Main St., Lock Haven. The Shoe Bank gives a pair of free new shoes, new socks, and one or more books, and it is usually open once a month, with appointments available from 11 a.m to 2 p.m.

Kids and teens, from wee ones all the way on up to turning 18, are eligible if they have Compass and live in Clinton County or the Liberty-Curtin School attendance area. If they are not in the Compass program, they may be referred by a school or agency.

“Since we started taking appointments, things are going much smoother for families, as well as for the volunteers,” said co-director Diahann Claghorn.

“We think that Compass PA will help things go smoothly at sign-in as well,” she said.

Appointments will be scheduled every 15 minutes depending on the size of the family. To book your time slot, call or text Diahann at 814-571-5324 (weekdays 7-9 p.m., please). Be sure to state if you are new to the program, how many boys and girls are coming, and if there are any special requests or needs.

Please let Diahann know on or before May 21 if you are ill or need to cancel for another reason. She keeps a waiting list.

Families who are unable to call or text ahead of time may still do so the morning of May 21, to see if a cancellation has opened up a time slot.

Everyone must wear a mask as a COVID-19 precaution. Please arrive five minutes early to keep your appointment. If you are late, you will have to reschedule.

Anyone who knows a family who can benefit from this service is encouraged to pass the word along. For more information about the Shoe Bank or becoming a volunteer, contact Diahann at 814-571-5324, email lhasb@outlook.com, or visit lockhavenshoebank.org.

The Shoe Bank relies solely on grants and donations. Funding is provided by the Clinton County Community Foundation, an M&T Bank grant, the John B. Hoy, Jr. Memorial Charity Golf Tournament, other grant agencies, clubs and civic groups, churches, and individual donors.
