‘Walk fast so people don’t notice,’ one person joked after a man shared how he paid R4500 for counterfeit designer sneakers.

A young man has paid the price for attempting to buy luxury shoes at a discount. Taking to Twitter, the scorned man shared how he paid a hefty R4500 for a pair of white Alexander McQueen sneakers. Unfortunately, when the “designer” shoes arrived, they weren’t Alexander McQueens but rather a really badly made replica with the words Alexander McQueen all mixed up.

Over the last few years, hundreds, maybe even thousands of Instagram “boutiques” have popped up online.

While many of them have built a good reputation for delivering fine-quality products to their customers, a number of them have gotten away with ripping unsuspecting customers off.

One man took to Twitter on 16 April last month to share how he became the unfortunate victim of a vendor selling knock-off items for original prices.

According to the young man with the handle @moemudi, he purchased the designer sneakers for N115k (R4500). Originals can set one back around R5500. When they arrived, the letters on the sneakers which should have read “Alexander McQueen” read “Already MoQDSHN”.

“What I ordered VS What I got,” he captioned photos of the shoes he wanted versus the shoes that were delivered to him.

The post received a number of reactions from social media users who shared stories of how they too got duped by fake online stores. Others advised him to sue the people who sold him the shoes. While some simply made jokes about his unfortunate purchase.

Here are some of their comments:

“Hahahahahaha, had a similar experience last year. Just return am collect your money back.”

“This would have been funny if not tragic with consequences for online business transactions. This is one of the reasons why I always insist on pay on delivery. If what is delivered doesn’t match what I ordered, I am not paying a dime.”

“U just have to walk fast people wouldn’t notice.”
